A New School Year and a Special Goal for Matthew

It’s hard to believe Matthew is already a week into 7th grade. Each new school year brings its own milestones, but this year, our family has set a special goal: helping Matthew learn to cook effectively and independently. Living with Angelman Syndrome means that progress often comes in smaller steps—but each step forward is worth celebrating.

This week, after work, we always manage to create a conversation with Matthew regarding his school activities. He is excited to grab his drum pad and sticks motioning about band activities, grabs his AAC device and tell us he is tired and he wants to rest. However, as I am preparing dinner each evening, he perks up with excitement. While in this momentum, I am allowing him to assist in any way. He sets the pan, all the basic ingredients and when I’m ready, I let him do the preparatory stages. It is never a full cycle of cooking, but allowing him to practice brings a boost of confidence which will create character.

Cooking isn’t just about food; it’s about confidence, life skills, and independence. We know the road won’t always be easy, but with patience, creativity, and persistence, we believe Matthew can rise to the challenge. This journey isn’t only about what’s on the plate—it’s about nourishing his sense of accomplishment and showing him that he is capable of more than we can imagine.
