2023 Angelman Syndrome Awareness

Since 2019, we have traveled to 39 States but somehow we missed Utah when we did our West Coast route. This year, we are striking UTAH from our bucket list.

Angelman Syndrome causes issues with mobility. Matthew didn’t start walking until he was 3. When he was younger, we have extensive physical therapy and while he still needs continuous therapy, he gets PT time with school, and we continue to incorporate physical activities daily. During summer, when our awareness usually happens, we try to pack in as many outdoor activities as we can for Matt.

Due to mobility issues, we are always apprehensive to do hiking or even walking long distances. We never shelter Matt in any neuro-typical activities but we are also realistic of expectations. Just because he has limitations doesn’t mean we don’t push his potential. Our motto has been … “do not say NO without trying” … well, unless of course, it has something to do with heights — no amount of bribing works for me.

Because of our realistic expectations; my husband surprised Matthew and me with a “Moab Bronco excursion”. We don’t have to walk on the trail path, but we go trailing with style.

Moab Bronco Rentals is a relatively new company owned by the Ellis Family. A family full of adventure and a lifelong love for the iconic Ford Bronco. Moab is a place they call home and have been for over the past 5 generations. They wanted to create a business that would allow others to see what it’s like to explore the country from the windshield of a Bronco. Their business concept caters to a variety of trail seekers … with a vehicle that can handle rough terrains and long-distance trails, you can set your phase, and your comfort level, and for people with disability and or limitations, you can experience the beauty of nature from the window of your vehicle and I might add, you are shielded from dust, dirt, and heat of the sun.

Moab Bronco Rentals have truly given us a magical time exploring Moab. When Mike wrote them an email of what we were trying to do, the company lend us their Bronco and sponsored our one-day excursion. They were so gracious and kind. They even dropped and picked up the vehicle from our RV location since we do not have a tow vehicle with us. It was a magical experience, we took our time, followed the easy-to-medium trail, and have seen few of the hidden beauties of Moab. We recommend doing the Moab Bronco excursion when you are exploring Moab, Utah!
